Ganges is one of the major rivers in India. The majority of population in the country had lived near the gangetic plain because the lands near the river had been favourable for cultivation. The river originated in the high hills of Himalayas in the northern part of India, had flown all the way from Uttar Pradesh to Bihar and West Bengal. Finally the river met the Bay of Bengal. Ganges has flown across Kolkata, the British capital of India, which is one of the 4 metropolitan cities of the country. The river had divided the 2 cities of Kolkata and Howrah. There are many beautiful bathing ghats across river Ganges, including the Ahiritola Ghat, the Shovabazar Ghat, the Bagbazar ghat, to mention a few. The civilization of north Kolkata developed along the area next to river Ganges. Swami Vivekananda’s Belur Math, famous Math for the hindus is situated across Ganges in Belur adjacent to Kolkata. The Dakhineswar Temple of Goddess Kali which is associated with the memories of Sri Ramakrishnadeb is also situated adjacent to Ganges in the place Dakshineswar. Many devotees from different parts of the world come to visit both Dakhineswar and also Belur Math. Ferry Service is common across Ganges. Ferry takes the passengers from the different ghats across Ganges namely Bagbazar Ghat, Shobhabazar Ghat; and reach them to the office areas like BBD Bag. The circular rail also travels adjacent to the Ganges in Kolkata. Many visitors travel in boats, launches and ferries and go to Botanical Garden at Shibpur which is adjacent to Kolkata. The history of Kolkata is more than 350 years old. The British Government made Kolkata, the capital of India, along the Ganges, with the thought that their concept of London built along the river Tames will have some similarity. The major stadiums in Kolkata, namely Eden Gardens, the football stadiums are also built very close to the Ganges. The river is also treated as God considering its contribution in cultivation. Rice, potatoes, cauiflowers and other major crops are grown in West Bengal, along the Gangetic plain. The fertility of the alluvial soil is related with the influence of river Ganges. The different fishes that are caught from the Ganges are sold in India and abroad including the famous Hilsa fish. In conclusion it can be said that Ganges, the river which had catered to human benefits should be restored and pollution from paints that flow in the water during immersion of idols of different Goddesses during Durga Puja should be avoided.
