Satinath Mukherjee was a gem of gems.He was not only a great classical singer but used the classical touch for his own songs and also composed landmark tunes.

 

Majority of his own songs were composed by he himself.He composed the music of his own super hit songs like “pashaner buke likhona amar naam”, “bonopatho majhe Chaya ghera sanjhe”, “Jodi tumi naa mor konodin shono”, “baluka belai kurai jhinuk” to mention a few.

 

When it came to composition of music for other singers, there was a different story.He chose the right singer for the right song and gave a tune which fitted the singer.

 

His songs for Manobendra Mukherjee were all classically oriented and very tough to sing.Some of the brilliant songs he composed for Manobendra Mukherjee included “tomar pother prante moner monideep jele rekhechi”, “tumi firaye diyecho bole phire chole jai chole jai”, “bhule gechi tobe sei pothe jete tumi chile mor pashe”.Some of the songs were written by Shyamal Gupta.

Others were written by Pabitra Mitra.Manobendra’s romantic andaz suited the songs very much.

 

Satinath Mukherjee composed tragic tunes for Dhananjoy Bhattacharya and Pannalal Bhattacharya.Dhananjay Bhattacharya sang the song “ami cheyechi tomae eki mor oporadh” in royal style.Pannalal Bhattacharya poured all his emotions from the heart to sing the song “tomar moton amioto koto soyechi”.Both the songs became super hit in the late 1950s.

 

For Hemanta Mukherjee’s deep voice Satinath Mukherjee composed the song “tomar amar karo mukhe kotha nei”.The song ended up being smash hit.For Shyamal Mitra Satinath Mukherjee composed the song “eto alo aar eto hashi gaan” which also became hit in the late 1950s.

 

Satinath Mukherjee taught music to a big group of singers.While Shyamal Mitra was one of his early pupils, Dipak Maitra and Jyotileshwar Mukherjee were renowned students.They all created their own style of singing but were inspired by the powerful singing of Satinath Mukherjee.

 

Satinath Mukherjee has also the record giving the first Bengali tune to Lata Mangeshkar “akash pradip jale” which became super hit in the 1950s.He gave excellent tunes to Mohammad Rafi including “ekhono biday bolona”, “pakhitar buke jeno teer merona”, and many more tunes.

 

Satinath Mukherjee also sang and composed tunes for landmark Bengali films like Tapan Sinha’s Atithi released in 1966 where his song “majhe nodi bohe re” became popular.His wife Utpala Sen also sang the song with him.His songs and films require restoration.
